SD70AH?
Author: dharris

Noticed that this new EMD I shot at MP116 near Harrisburg was designated SD70AH instead of SD70Ace. What's the difference?

It's still an ACE but is built as Heavy. Unit has additional weight added similar to csx es44ah gevos

Right, the SD70AH is not an official EMD model designation, just a UP designation to keep the "Heavies" separate for power dispatching purposes.

Wonder why they let them roam free when they were built special.

The power desk may just see them as a 4,300hp road engine deployable as needed. Say one engine has an issue, this unit may have subbed in. Then it gets interchanged to another railroad, and voila it roams the system.

Because they aren't held in captive service. UP adopted the heavy concept in 2013 and all new EMD's and GE's have been delivered to the railroad as such since then.

Are they comparable as far as tractive effort with the GE heavy units?

Thank you in advance.
