DnH, CP Rail to Philadelphia??
Author: Mikedc3

Hi all,
I should know this but I don't. How do they get to Philly? What route do they take? I've been searching for over an hour with no luck.

Thanks!!

CP stopped going to philly at least a couple years ago, and in short order is selling all of the former D&H south of Saratoga Springs to NS.

CPR pulled out of Philly over a year ago. I think they still run to Allentown/Bethlehem, though, over the former CNJ/LV route from Scranton (Dupont Jct) to Allentown,  and to Harrisburg via Northumberland. All will be NS shortly, after NS takes over CPR south/west of Schenectady.

When they did it was from Taylor to Dupont Jct LV/CNJ  to Allentown reverse on RDG East Penn to Reading then RDG to Philly.

NS will take over Saratoga/Schenectady to Binghamton and Northumberland. CPR will keep from Rouses Point to Schenectady and Port of Albany.

I was under the belief that NS ownership will end at Mohawk Yard, but they'll still have trackage rights from there to Saratoga and to Mechanicville.

Yes, they did that route originally - into Allentown yard, run around train, and head west on the Reading to Reading and then down to Philly.

. In at least recent (CP) times they ran Sunbury Line/Harrisburg/Reading/Philly. That route seems a lot longer, not sure why they went that way unless it was to avoid the grades on Conrail's Lehigh Line.

Hope this helps,

Frank

NS does have a haulage train to Montreal that CP handles up to Rouses, then hands off to CN, if I'm not mistaken...?

NS will own as far north as CPF 485 (Schenectady). Mohawk Yard which is north of Schenectady starts at CPF 483. NS will retain wreckage rights from CPF 485 north to Mechanicville on the Freight Sub and north to Saratoga Springs on the Canadian Sub.

30T/31T (930/931 on CP). NS crews run the trains between Saratoga and Enola. CP runs the trains between Saratoga and Rouses Point and CN to Montreal.

That is correct. CP will continue to handle NS haulage between Saratoga and Rouses Point.

CPF485 certainly makes as much sense, if not more, as CPF483 for the "division post" between NS and CP. CPF485 is where the Amtrak trains (Adirondack, Ethan Allen) transfer to/from the D&H, if I recall correctly.

I imagine NS will establish dispatching for its part of the former D&H in Harrisburg, and I'd be interested to know the mechanics of doing this or if it will temporarily make other arrangements.

"Wreckage rights" sounds a bit ominous! 😉

CP did it to avoid the run-around move at Allentown Yard.
