NS Ithaca Secondary to Re-open
Author: JPB

NS has been working feverishly to repair washout in Newfield NY south of Ithaca on the ex-LV Ithaca Branch: http://www.ithacajournal.com/story/news/local/2015/06/18/norfolk-southern-line/28942257/
Aerial photos of washout and repair efforts: http://ithacavoice.com/2015/06/aerial-photos-show-flood-relief-efforts-in-southern-tompkins/

Question was asked a few days back re: what traffic uses this line. Excerpt from the article:
"...The damaged track has inconvenienced Cargill Deicing Technology in Lansing, which uses the rail daily..."
and
"...The Cayuga power plant in Lansing, which also uses Norfolk Southern’s line, is not affected, plant manager Jerry Goodenough said. The plant uses the service about twice per month.

The Cargill Salt name was changed to Cargill Deicing
Technology to reflect a more modern BS appeal trying to
improve its business image with regard to the additional
liquid deicing products it sells and adds to the Halite(rock salt).

Word has it that after lunch break, Cargill workers now complain  "back to the de-icing technology facility!"

It goes along well with their anti union policy and
denying minscule pay raises for five years after
following the company poiicy of filing first aid
reports. And if you have to file a comp claim
as it is held against you forever.

The power plant down the line in Lake Ridge is
now referred to as Cayuga Energy Partners and wil be shut down
as NYSEG wants to upgrade the transmission lines rather than pay them to
generate power as this power plant is the only one generating electricity in
the south central finger lakes. The other power plants the company owns are
shut down and shuttered.

I was at Sayre Sunday and found 96M preparing to take a string of approx a dozen ballast cars North up to Station Rd. in West Danby.

Thanks for the report.  The electric generation industry has become ruthless with cutting out whole plants that are considered uneconomic, or are in regions that aren't growing.  Right now there's a lot of wholesale power flowing, and little tolerance for older or less productive plants.  While it's correct to blame EPA for some of the shut downs, others are due to plain old economics.
