NS #8102 Visits the MGA
Author: jmbreitigan

After getting a heads up from two friends that the 8120 was leading an empty hopper train to load at Bailey mine I decided to head down and try my luck yesterday. It was going to be a hot & humid day so I was hoping to get some shots early but that did not work out. I met up with a friend in Waynesburg. The first encounter was at ARK near Clarksville, PA. Probably my best shot of the day as it was a meet with N73. Next shot is from an overpass near Jefferson, PA. The last shot was on the Manor Branch near mile 11. This was taken @ 1:00 PM and lighting was getting harsh. One last picture is N22 from an elevated spot near the NS Fork switch in the area of the old village of Time, PA. It would have been nice to see N21 in this last shot but the heat, humidity and bugs and being in the open was too much for me. It already was a long day so we headed home.

I did learn a little about the N21 which was a Wisconsin Electric train. It is the longest train that visits the MGA. It consists of 130 hoppers and they are all 53 foot long hoppers. So with two locomotives it comes to a 7050 foot train. And loaded it comes to over 17000 tons. There are 3 sidings south of Brownsville, PA. on the way to the Bailey mine and only one can accommodate a train this long. The siding from WAYNE to PETE. The other two are ARK to GATE at Clarksville and BRITT to SYCAMORE. So at ARK the N73 North had to give way to the N21 headed South.

So although a short post I hope you find it interesting.
John

1. N21 meets N73 at ARK. To the right is some of the leftover from MOW work during hell week.

2. N21 from the overpass of route 188 near Jefferson, PA.

3. N21 is approaching mile 11 on the Manor Branch.

One more......................

4. N22 with two SD70 ACe's (1108 & 1057) heads North from the Bailey mine with 100 hoppers. Halfway back to the far left you can see the new track to the BMX loadout loop.

Thank you all.
Jeff, it was hot so I assume that the A/C was still problematic. Alan, I did get my camera back and this trip was a test with it and it looks like it is OK.
