Eastern Railroad Discussion > A Date With a VirginianDate: 08/03/15 11:54 A Date With a Virginian Author: Ohiorailfan The VGN Heritage made an appearance in Columbus, Ohio leading NS 376. Mutliple fans were out to capture the move. I captured it at CP 146, Hague Avenue, and Harper road.

The VGN unit is a personal favorite -- I have always really liked that Virginian paint scheme. And the signal bridge is fine too. It's a much better design than the "tinkertoy" designs currently being implemented. Much less visual clutter, and better signal visibility as a result. The "tinkertoy" designs are visual nightmares from a design point of view. A relatively simple design structurally, too. With today's higher strength steels and fastening / joining systems, single beam designs like that would be even easier to erect than before. Southern figured this out in the old days (don't I recall that theirs were recycled from freight car center sills?), and so did Pennsy. Don't want to paint them? Use Cor-Ten "rusting surface" steel. Sorry to interject an ancillary point, but I've been itching to say this -- and that shot of that beautiful VGN-design heritage units with that impressive, modern-looking Pennsy signal bridge was an opportunity. Design-oriented guy rant over. Back to compliments and offering thanks again for the wonderful images of that stunning VGN paint scheme. MC Columbia, Missouri |
