Eastern Railroad Discussion > RF&P Trains; Drone Shots and more; August 27, 2015

Had a decent day on the RF&P today, with a few trains, and had my buddy in town with his drone for a few hours. Also was able to shoot P091-27 with the Phase I Amtrak Heritage on point. 
1: Probably one of my favorite VRE shots in a while, P312 rounds the bend at Massaponax (CFP 55.0). Seen in the background is a couple of pieces of track equipment while they replace the Mine Road Crossing. 
2: D779-27 heads south at Jones' Crossing with a GP38-2s leading a GP38-2 today. 
3: Running under symbol X792-26, 2 lite 3200 seires ES44AC's head off the Sealston to Richmond, presumably to be re-fueled.

4: First drone shot of the day, P094-27 is seen pulling into the Fredericksburg Station with P42DC #19 on point.

I've always wondered... in the last photo, the wide bridge over Sophia Street. Did passenger platforms extend that far north at one time? 

Yes, the platforms at one point extended across Sophia, Caroline, Princess Anne, and Charles Streets.  They were removed in the late 1970s or early 1980s between Sophia and Caroline Streets and between Princess Anne and Charles Streets.  RF&P had a drainage problem through the platform area and removal of the platforms elimated the problem.  At the time it was done, almost any train could be accomodated on the remaining portion between Caroline and Princess Anne Streets.  The only exception was the "Silver Star" which at one time ran 18 cars.  Two station stops were required at times.
