Geneseo, NY area?
Author: steamfan

Planning to visit the area in the near future -- any RR related operations worth checking into?  I do intend to check out Letchworth State Park area...

TIA for any tips...

The CSX main through Rochester and Batavia is a lot busier than the NS through Letchworth Park. I'm not sure if the NS bridge over the Genesee River in the park, which is to be replaced, is still accessible because of the construction.

There are several cool shortlines within an hour or two, but unless you have a big block of train time, that's probably out of reach.

Will have a couple days in the area --- is Lakeville one of the shortline locations by chance?  Skeleton trip Bath / Geneseo / Seneca Falls loop of sorts...

Lakeville is only 5 miles from Geneseo.
Currently the LA&L road train is on duty around 11am, but that is likely to change to 4pm soon when track work begins on the line.
If you like EMD's then the R&S is worth checking out too. I have not paid much attention to their current schedule, but at least one of their trains, probably
the GW1 salt train, should be running in daylight. The salt mine is located just a few miles South of Geneseo on Route 63. If the GW1 is running during the day it should
be at the mine around 4pm.

When did that change to 11 a.m., and is that the 'normal' time now? They used to report first thing in the morning and get going north by about 0700.

Dave,

11am to noon has been the normal road train start time since January.

Why the change?

Supposedly it was due to conflicts with the R&S schedule. Guess the LA&L was being held for long periods of time before they could get up
to the R&S yard.

John,

The R&S is a regional shortline that runs out of Brooks Ave. Yard next to the Rochester Airport. They run trains to the salt mine on the old G&W, and some old
Lackawanna trackage, and a train to the NS interchange at Silver Springs, NY. Each train is a turn job, so there are 4 trains a day, plus a local running between Brooks Yard and P&L Jct.
in Caledonia, NY, where the lines split.

I did observe this during several visits a few years ago. The LA&L and GW-1 often wanted to work Brooks Avenue at the same time.

John,

It might be worth a drive over to the old G&W shops in Retsof too. There is occasionally power parked outside the shops.
It is only a few miles outside of Geneseo. Go down below the college and take Route 63 North to Retsof. The shops are on Retsof Road.
Google Maps is your friend.

Go get the WNYP.  Clearly they are the best show around right now.

The WNYP is a little out of the way, but if you can get some lineup info from Lakeville, it might be worth the 2 hour drive from the Geneseo area.
John, Is this going to be a weekend visit or a weekday visit to the area?

Here's the R&S Silver Springs train as it rolled through Pavilion, NY last Friday about 2:30 PM. First caught him at P&L Junction where the salt mine branch takes off, then chased him on NY 5 and NY 19. Easy chase.

I also highly recommend going after the LAL.

If if you get bored, the CSX mainline is not too far north.

Another news flash for me.... I did not realize they were running to Silver Springs in daylight. That used to be a night job, with potential for catching the return trip to Rochester after sunrise.

So the current schedule must be for the RS1 job to the Springs at 11am and the GW1 job to the mine at 11pm.
I have not kept up with what they are currently running, but usually the GW1 is the daylight train until Winter, and then schedules change.

Do Letchworth in the morning. Locals said there is a morning train every day. 0800ish when I saw it. NS cut all the brush back and you can see it from both sides.
