Pair of W&LE Tunnel Motors Working as a Pair
Author: SDP40F600

I was in Bellevue, Ohio, watching an outbound NS manifest freight slowly rumble through the mini plant as it headed westward. I had heard a Wheeling 90 on the radio, but it apeared to be switching. I looked up and there it was entering the Brewster Connection. I grabbed the camera and sprinted for an open area where East Street ends at the orginal W&LE right of way. The Wheeling train had a pair of Denver & Rio Grande Western tunnel motors as its motive power. Both units are still painted in the D&RGW livery although they are owned by the Wheeling. I've caught these two together before, but it is still a thrilling site to see them.

Photo 1: The train is on the Brewster Connection as it makes its way off Norfolk Southern.

Photo 2: Crossing East Street, which dead ends where I am standing.

Photo 3: Heading for the W&LE Hartland Subdivision.

I knew I would have time to get ahead of the train so I drove over to Monroeville and walked a short distance on the North Coast Inland Trail to catch the W&LE train crossing the West Branch of the Huron River. I'm standing on a bridge once used by New York Central trains.

(Photos 4 and 5): The train is crossing over the river. The black water reminded me of a Dobbie Brothers song with the line, "Oh black water, keep on rollin.' "

(Photo 6): A going away shot looking down the trail.

These two are regular power on the Brewster/Bellevue trains and often run back to back with an occasional "B" (normal WE) unit between them if tonnage dictates. They can be found on the Toledo trains too. A big surprise for me one day was catching one up at Falls Junction on Wheeling's Cleveland Sub, not it's normal haunt for sure.
Congratulations on the IOTD boss :)

So I guess these are the last remaining "unpatched" D&RGW units.  Great shots.

Is there a reason why these two units never were repainted?
