coal train to delaware
Author: MdRailfan

Does the Indian River power plant in Delaware still receive coal shipments.  I had heard it was converted to natural gas. The reason I ask is because I saw a loaded coal train head north on the NEC from Perryville Md. Sunday and was wondering.  If not, then where might this train be heading?  Thank you for any info.

IR has not been converted to NG but has not recived a coal train in ages. Political agenda dominates.

Thank you, so they may have gotten one Sunday or one is coming soon.  If not for IR then still leaves the question of where is it going?

Indeed, a 568 went south to Indian River on Sunday.

It's my understanding that only one of the plant's four burners is currently certified for use. Two others have been dismantled, and a third is off line.

Impressive.
What was the date of the last move prior to this one?

Yes, only the most modern of the 4 units at IR comes online. Two units had been idle, then a consent agreement with DENREC shut down the third in late 2013.

Ambient?

Spell check may have changed your intended message.

There was some criticism when the Delaware City refinery came on line about relaxation of some pollution etc deadlines there. Perhaps Indian River got a similar extension?

Even tho I live in the area i do not listen to or see NS Delmarva operations. I thought there was one coal train a week, maybe less. There was a time in the Conrail years when it was planned to be one unit train a day to IR but it never reached that level.   I did not know two units were shut down. Indian River is on the water but does not have barge facilities for water delivery. Why is his slanted now? A coal train going north at AMTK has to be an Indian River train. Edgemoor coverted a decade ago.

The power facilities in Dover switched to natural gas several years ago. The Koch facility (ex-Dupont) in Seaford did likewise.
