Eastern Railroad Discussion > FreeDate: 05/09/03 14:48 Free Author: nikonman A P-C SD-45/SD-35 tandem rest at AR Interlocking, Gallitzin, Pa. in 1974.
This photo comes free of charge. I\'ll waive the $5.00 fee for this group of great railfans. Andy(I\'d pay years of salary to go back to this) Date: 05/09/03 15:07 Re: Free Author: conrailsd8 which direction are the locos goin? torwards the SD45 or the other way?
Date: 05/09/03 17:12 Re: Free Author: CRmac80 I\'ll 2nd that thought!
Nice catch too-the first of only 5 SD-45\'s(6235-6239)that Penn Central(not PRR)purchased. RAD Date: 05/09/03 18:21 Re: Free Author: nikonman It\'s been a while (30 years), but it went like this: These two pushed an empty coal train to Cresson. The SD-35 was leading. They cut off at Cresson and we doubled back to AR.Back then, we were strictly in the dark(no scanners). We thought they would come east on these tracks. The set came back on the westbound side (UN) and then ran around the loop you can see in the upper part of the photo. They then backed up to where they are sitting. If they were to run back down the mountain to the helper pocket at ALTO, the SD-45 would lead.
Andy Date: 05/09/03 18:37 Re: Free Author: nikonman On second thought, the helpers would run back to town (Altoona) and get into position by Rose Interlocking. I don\'t remember any helpers sitting at ALTO back then.
Andy Date: 05/09/03 18:43 Re: Free Author: chessie-2117 Andy, you\'re KILLING me. These shots are spectacular! I\'d give almost anything to step back to those days. Thanks so much for sharing.
A quick question for you Penn Central fans. Of the locomotives that were actually purchased by the Penn Central, did they show a preference towards GE or EMD? Just curious about whom they gave the majority of business to. John R Http://www.trainweb.org/phllocal Date: 05/09/03 19:16 Re: Free Author: CRmac80 Chessie2117,EMD was hands down the winner,in numbers anyway, with PC.Off the top of my head,GE got orders for U-23-B,U-33-B,U-23-C,and U-33-C models.Large blocks of GP-40,SD-40,and GP38/38-2 models, plus 60 SW-1500\'s,made for some good EMD numbers on the PC order books.
Alco C-636\'s were delivered in PC black but were ordered by the PRR,as was the above mentioned U-33-C\'s. RAD Date: 05/09/03 19:17 Re: Free Author: nikonman I\'ll try to list what P-C bought after the 1968 merger. Add on, if I\'ve forgot some locos.
95 U-23-B\'s 81 U-33-B\'s 5 SD-45\'s 45 SD-40\'s 4 U-33-C\'s 19 U-23-C\'s 35 SD-38\'s 493 GP-38/38-2\'s (Shades of PRR!) 125 SW-1500\'s 15 C-636\'s (Delivered 3/68, ordered by PRR?) Totals: EMD - 703 GE - 199 ALCO - 15(Maybe?) Andy Date: 05/09/03 19:19 Re: Free Author: nikonman RAD, you type too fast :^)
Andy Date: 05/09/03 19:49 Re: Free Author: CRmac80 Not really a fast typer by any means Andy(I\'m sure you\'ve seen my spelling goofs!)!Of course I forgot about the last group of SW-1500\'s,and those "almost" IHB ones!It\'s still a wonder that PC had better credit than the IHB,but good units such as those would have good resale value if repossessed.
RAD Date: 05/09/03 19:54 Re: Free Author: nikonman What was the deal with the PRSL GP-38\'s. Didn\'t the PC have to take them due to PRSL\'s bad credit and then stenciled them PC and then gave them to the PRSL?
Andy Date: 05/09/03 20:06 Re: Free Author: CRmac80 Right you are Andy-but my understanding is that it kept those Baldwins around for a few more years!
RAD ps:go over to the PC forum "next door" and check out PC on EL for a shot of a PRR keystone/PC unit. |
