John Date: 06/29/16 17:29 Re: Wet Weather Wednesday Author: tp117 Q135 originating in Portsmouth sould be made up of well cars with 40 foot wells for marine cons. But for many reasons intermodal trains are a mixture of car types not always best suited for the intermodal units they carry. Over the last decade or more the well car fleet has been narrowed to 40ft wells for marine cons and 53ft wells for domestic cons. Cars with 45ft or 48ft con/van capacity still run around but get fewer in number. There are only eight well and spine car sizes that will survive into the future. By far the predominat types are the 40ft five pack, and single and articulated three packs for 53 ft. The fleet of three and five pack spine cars for trailers and cons is holding its own, I've seem many with new hitches. Using a 2013 ORER I did an Excel spreadsheet of the fleet at the time. I also got 204ft for three well 53ft domestic cars but 267ft for marine five pack wells including the bulkhead cars which just do not seem to wear out. I will share my spreadsheet with anyone interested if you PM me. But do it fast as my subcription to TO is expiring soon and not sure if I will re-new. I just got a Jul 2015 ORER but do not plan to do a similar study as it is a lot of work. So to answer the Q, if the q135 was all marine five pack wells the shortest it could have been was 11481ft.
