"Dark" Signals on NS Main in the Tennessee Valey
Author: navy5717th

It looks like the  NS's new "Dark" signals policy (i.e., dark until approached)  has pretty well been implemented across the Valley.

I'm curious as to what the engineers think of it. I suppose that if it's working as it should be they wouldn't notice any difference, but I'll ask anyway.

Thanks,

As long as they're lit when you get there it's no different.

Approach lit signals are common around the country.  A discussion a few threads down deals with it.   This saves electricity and bulbs.

This occurred on the West End Memphis District 4 or 5 months ago.  Makes it hard to get a headsup without a radio.

Well, sort of.  I go to LaGrange, Ky. and they  have a "lit on approach" signal at the east end of town.  It it's showing all red, expect a train from that direction.  Any other colors showing and you expect a train from the west.  If it's dark, it's time to go for lunch.  It usually lights up about 5 or 10 minutes before a train but occasionally it will have you sitting and waiting for an hour.

Dark signals, approach lit apparently.   On the west end you could figure out pretty easily whether something was within range by observing the constantly lit intermediate signals, but they went dark.   Thought that was what you were talking about.
