URHS (SL&RG) F7 578 At Pavonia

SL&RG 578 basking in the sun waiting for it's ride to South Philly to be set up to head south to North Carolina ... the 578 and it's sister unit 726 could not travel together due to stiff couplers so each one hadda go out on it's own ...

So URHS sold these to SLRG, or is it a lease?

Thanks OOS.  Was wondering what happened to unit #2.  If they don't get to NC soon for their Santa train operations between Mt Holly and Lowell NC, it might be a wash for this season's operations.  Curious if anyone has seen the first F7 since it departed Pavonia last Friday.

Stiff Couplers?  Can someone explain please?  I've been around the railroad all my life and have ridden behind lots of F units from various railroads and I do not understand what you are speaking about here?  Thanks.

Pins rusted in place? So, for the REAL SL&RG (and a Carolina Southern unt) I give you Alamosa CO.

Out

I'm curious too. Usually the issue is a lack of alignment control couplers. Conrail used to install rubber coupler stops on them (some of their ancient SW's had them too), but I believe that is no longer done, and a limit on how many can be moved in a train is in place instead.

hey B the head honcho at PEH in Camden is in charge of inspecting these for movement when they go out ... he said the draft gear in particular doesn't allow for them to be towed together although they came up together on CR from Tuckahoe to Camden ..

Was that Eric? ;-)

From the description, it does sound like an alignment control draft gear issue. Only becomes a real problem with dynamic braking, and having high buff (compression) forces on the draft gear.
