FEC is the closest and looks like the line actually passes underneath a new(?) runway.  Lots of tank cars stored in that yard.

I believe FEC also builds trains to and from the Fort Lauderdale container port in that yard.

Prayers for all affected by this shooting.

I wondered, the tank cars on the rail ......loaded with aviation fuel?
I saw a tank farm almost parallel with those tank cars.

Might be ethanol, FEC moves a lot of that cargo

FEC is on the east side of the airport, adjacent to airport property. That's where you saw the people running to on TV.  CSX, Tri-Rail and Amtrak are on the west side of the airport, close to the airport but not adjoining airport property.

Tank cars are for the ethanol unload at Port Everglades. I'm not aware of any jet fuel being handled by rail at FLL.

Port Everglades is just east of the Ft Lauderdale airport and is a major fuel distribution for all of south Florida hence the tank cars. FEC brings in ethanol to the Port.  The FEC Ft Lauderdale yard spans the east side of the airport.  In fact they had a major relocation project a couple years ago in one of the major airport expansion projects. One of the runways actually bridges over the FEC mainline and yard.  I believe there may have been some shots on TO when they were building the bridge over the FEC when all of the Concrete beams FELL onto the tracks below in a domino effect mishap. They can't go too much further east as the Port is there and then you have the Inter-coastal Waterway then the Atlantic Ocean. To the west is I-95 and CSXT/TriRail/Amtrak.

Motiva Enterprises receives all the ethanol and blends it with gasoline for distribution to gas stations. Their facility can unload 20 tank cars at one time, they average about 10 or so unit trains a month.
