I find it hard to believe they would be actually shutting down when they just released one of the C39's in G&W paint today..

The thread about the H.O.G. stated that G&W is shutting down the P&W passenger operations. There is no way they would make a major purchase like that and shut down everything.

In the caption of the RP.net photo, Kevin B states that G&W is using a new reporting mark, PWRZ to avoid confusion with another railroad PWRR.  I don't quite follow, as I thought P&W already had its own, PW; and, typically any marks ending in Z are for trailers and U are for containers.  I'm not denying what's been painted on the locomotive, but find it to be unusual that any locomotive anywhere ends in a "Z" reporting mark.

I've brought up the "Z" issue in several related Facebook discussions.

I suspect the PWRZ mark dates back to when P&W had intermodal trailers, and some not-so-sharp person at GWI thought it could be applied differently. I'll be interested to learn if AAR objects to this, since it was also my impression that reporting marks ending in "Z" are not intended for any other purpose.

I was horrified too when you reported they were shitting down and wondered just where it would land. Very concerned also as to how many 'therds' were involved.  From the famous words uttered many decades ago - "Oh the humanity ! "

interesting to see the GW orange next to a BNSF orange, makes the GW scheme look all ot worse than it already does.  I'll miss the brown and orange.

Versus the other "PW" - the Portland & Western, an Oregon rail operator which has been operated by GW for many years.

Or the Pittsburgh & Western, which, while a long-fallen flag, is still the name of the P&W Subdivision between Pittsburgh and New Castle...

PNWR is the reporting mark for the Portland & Western Railroad.

The context of the original post seemed clear to me (GWI just bought...) that the New England line was the P&W in question.  They've owned the Portland & Western since forever.

You're right, I didn't think PW sounded quite right.  Thanks.
