Hump Yards in GA
Author: twropr

With news on another thread about EHH shutting down Tilford's Hump, I think back 10-15 yrs ago when NS took the hump out of Inman and turned the property into an intermodal facility.
How has NS been serving Atlanta since the dehumping?  Are there locals based out of either DeButts (Chattanooga) or Brosnan (Macon) that leave preblocked with cars for the various Atlanta industries?  Is the Ford plant still active in Hapeville - if so, do their cars come preblocked from one of the two aforementioned yards?
It should be interesting to see if CSX comes up with a similar pattern from Radnor (Nashville) and Rice (Waycross) to serve their Atlanta area customers.

As for NS' Atlanta manifest traffic, two pairs of manifest trains originate / terminate at East Point's Industry Yard.  Those are 139/140 out of Macon's Brosnan Yard and 347/348 out of Chattanooga's Debutts Yard.  These trains haul most of the Atlanta area's traffic.  Other through freights set out and pick up Atlanta traffic at Chamblee Yard.

Ford's assembly plant at Hapeville was shut down in 2006.  GM's assembly plant at Doraville was shut down in 2008.

As for CSX's Atlanta manifest traffic, Q580 / Q581 out of Nashville's Radnor Yard was extended to Atlanta to haul the area's local traffic.  Other through freights such as Q541/Q542, Q667/Q678 and Q614/Q619 will set out and pick up Atlanta traffic.

Hapeville has been razed and Porsche has built a facility including a test track, on site. Doraville has also been razed. It currently is a demolition site.

Porsche has built...

There's a real irony. Ford pushed aside by Porsche in F-150 country.

The Doraville site was mentioned two or three years ago as a possibility for a new Amtrak station. Haven't heard much about that recently.

FWIW, Ford had a plant in the city of Atlanta 1915-1942 (served by Southern) before it built the Hapeville plant in 1947, served by CofG at the beginning. Industry Yard was CofG. General Motors also had a plant in the Lakewood neighborhood of Atlanta; it closed in 1990 and had been served by Southern.

Those two Atlanta area plants were the reason for one of the hottest trains on the ex-Rathole; the 'Sparkplug'. Almost entirely auto parts boxcars delivered to Southern in Cincinnati by B&O, NYC,PRR and DTI years ago from parts plants in their service territories. Trains mag had an article about it many years ago
