NYSW SU99 Chase
Author: erielackawanna

Hard to believe this was three Fridays ago - but I've been very behind in editing photos.

Was visting my in-laws in NJ and had planned on a Friday evening chase of SU99 for that day but it arrived with lots of rain. Figured what the heck, I'll do it anyway. Sometimes you get some neat images in the rain.

Image one is the train awaiting a road crew in Bogota. Power was two SD60s and one SD40-2.

Image two is a different angle on the same shot.

Image three is what remains of the Susquehanna's Bogota station I believe it used to be twice this size and filled the spot where the cinderblock structure that is attached to it is now.

When I saw a crew van (or pickup) coming down the street, I raced ahead to Maywood. By now it was really pouring. I don't think you can see it in the shots.

Image four is of the S2 on display in Maywood.

Image five is of the Susquehanna station in Maywood.

Image six is of the SU99 appearing just moments after I heard "Good roll-by SU99," on the radio. Not sure who gave the roll-by.

Image seven is still at Maywood with the train now passing the plinthed end cab.

I naively, in very heavy traffic, thought I could beat this train to Wyckoff. So I took off in the heavy rain on NJ streets and by the time I passed under the tracks on 208 saw it was already over me. Still, I raced on to Wyckoff and managed to get to the station before the gates went down.

Image eight is the the train coming into downtown Wyckoff.

Image nine is the train passing the Susquehanna station.

Now at the time I got out of the car in Wyckoff, my plan was still to race ahead to get it going by the Newfoundland station. But I got so soaked and was so miserable when I got back into the car, and also concerned for the camera, which I wanted to dry out, that I gave up from here and let it go.

You did good with that chase. With a heavy train you usually can easily catch him in Hawthorne and then again in Wycoff but with 3 60's and only 50 cars he'll march right the hill to Wycoff at track speed. With rush hour traffic you never know. Thanks for posting.

Good shots for bad weather. My favorite is number seven showing the then and now of the railroad.

And number 8 shows what the mainline track looks like now with the track in the foreground looking like what the entire railroad looked like circa 1980.
