Beryl, WV - WVC Junction - 21 May 2017
Author: DTWilson

Beryl, WV is home to the West Virginia Central Junction Yard that serves the Verso Paper Mill in nearby Luke, MD. The yard was originally West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Railway, later Western Maryland Railway, and now owned by CSX.

1) Helper Set B877-21 leads a loaded coal drag on the former WM Thomas subdivision passed the yard at Beryl. In the background is the "Lime Kiln" for the paper mill.

2) Another shot of the drag working west on the Thomas. In the background is the log conveyor that take the pulwood into the de-barking drums at the Verso Woodyard. Both the Wood Yard and Lime Kiln are in West Virginia and the remainder of the paper mill is in Maryland.

3) T051 shoving their drag west around the Curve at Beryl, WV

The local assigned to the Junction, B770 readies the outbound cars to be taken to Cumberland, MD. This evening train was 60 cars, more than one yard track could handle so the local assembled it's train on the mainline... The rear of the train a couple of cars from the Rt.46 road crossing with the headend at the yard office.

I have a couple of questions. How is the pulpwood delivered to the plant.
Is it shipped in by rail or truck?

Also, I noticed that Kingsford Charcoal has a plant located next to the
pulpwood processing plant. Does Kingsford use the waste from that plant
to make the charcoal briquettes?

Pulpwood and Chips are received by Truck. Rail shipment stopped a long time ago. There is a conveyor system that takes the bark and other waste material from the Wood yard directly to a pile beside the Kingsford Retort.

I know the roads out that way don't follow the Thomas too well, but do you think it is possible to chase a train to Mt. Storm and catch it at a couple of places?

Also have you ever been back to the trestle on the Thomas west of the Bloomington area? It looks like it might be accessible from the Barnum Rail Trail across the N. Branch Potomac River. Or there may also be a 4-wheeler trail that continues past Seldom Seen Road?

With a little preplanning you can certainly catch a drag in a couple of different places on their way west to the plant. Depending on the time of day they depart, some spots have better lighting then others.

The trestle you talk about is a little difficult to get to by normal means. The last time I was there (15 years ago) was by 4-wheeler when we were called there on a brush fire. Photography from the ground isn't the greatest as the view really wasn't that open. I've had friends fly over it with Drones and another fellow shot from his airplane with spectacular results.
