Mt Storm Empties at Keyser - 13 July 2017
Author: DTWilson

Typically 2 crews will bring a set of empties down from the Mt. Storm Power Station. The "symboled" crew in this case U051-12 will lead from the power station down the Stoney River Sub to Bayard, WV. Once at Bayard, the train will reverse and the helper set will lead east bringing the train down the Thomas Sub to Beryl, WV and on into the yard at Keyser.

At the Keyser the crews will set up the empties for a trip west to Grafton and the mines to be loaded.

1) & 2) Cut away from the Empties at Keyser, the engineer for Helper set B877-12 takes the power east on track #2 to protect the movement as the U051-12 crew prepares to shove their train into the east yard.

2) The Conductor from B877-12 hangs the EOT on the rear of the empties and preforms the necessary brake tests.

Once in the east yard, power will be rearranged if necessary and the Helpers will be put away for the next loaded train going to the power station.

In this case the #711 needed to go on to Cumberland, MD for Inspection.

1) and 2) B877-12 starts back west to shove the #711 into the Freight Track for later pickup. Once they set off the locomotive, the crew will place the Helper Power in the west yard.

The U051 crew pulls up to the light to wait their turn into the west yard to pick up the #21. Once they have the power together, they will return to their train and go off duty. A new crew will take the train to Grafton.

3) Later the same Day, with new crews the trains are on the move.

Far Left - B875- 13 leads loaded drag T051 off the westbound siding as they start their trip west to Mt. Storm

Center - B770-13 shoves the loaded cars towrads the Keyser Industrial Park on the other side of town.

Right - With a new crew on board, U051-12 waits to go west to Grafton.

Great photos and explantion of this current operation. The last time I was down there it was still a 4-axle operation out of Bayard. What are the car counts and are they any different, loads vs. empties, up and down the hill to Mt. Storm? Thanks again! Rod Miller

Currently they handle 77 cars per train set. BUT... Mt. Storm has been expanding their coal yard!
