NS Major Terminal Dwell Inches Up Slightly
Author: NSSpike

After three weeks of decline at their 14 Major Yards, average terminal dwell hours inched up to 29.6 hours.
Birmingham's Norris Yard continues to struggle at 42 hours, followed by Chattanooga at 40 hours and Columbus at 35 hours for week ending 7/21/2017. Norris yards increase of 5 hours over the previous week came after a week ending 7/14 of 36 hours.

NOTE: The 29.6 hours is the average for NS's 14 Major Yards.
For the entire NS system, terminal dwell for week ending 7/21 was 24.9 hours compared to “the other railroad” at 28 hours.

NS had two yards over 40 hours dwell while CSX had four yards over 40 hours.
Nashville TN @ 60, Russell KY @ 57, Montgomery AL @ 49 and Toledo OH @ 45
CSX average dwell hours for their 15 major yards is 35.64 hours.

Last week and again this week we continue to see scattered in with the scheduled east bound traffic reroutes on the NS East End with trains 340 (MERIDIAN, MS (KCS MSSHNS) – BIRMINGHAM, AL) and 314 (NEW ORLEANS, LA (UP QLINSB) – BIRMINGHAM, AL) running through Atlanta on their way to Spencer Yard in Linwood NC.

#1 Today's NS 340 (MERIDIAN, MS (KCS MSSHNS) – BIRMINGHAM, AL) running on the Alabama Div East End District through Temple Georgia this morning with two head end units, 120 cars and a end of train DPU. First train through here with an end of train DPU, as east bound manifests have had mid train DPU's for several weeks now.

i drove past norris yard today and it was packed full!!!! from what i could see,the receiving yard had maybe 1 empty track as 1 was pulling into the receiving yard, could not see the west end departure tracks due to the one heading in blocking my view, but i thought i saw a headlight with something ready to head out thru the gaps between the cars. the csx yard in birmingham has been pretty full from what i have seen as well.

What is causing Norris Yard to be so full?

I'd like to think it's an increase in business. Cars on line are at 183,230. Up 1,760 from previous week.
Then CSX is up over the previous week 4,285 cars on line.
The economy is good!!!

Truthfully it probably had more to do with the shut down of the hump in Chattanooga than it does a sudden surge of business.

Heard one of the retarders had to be replaced today and a bad thunderstorm knocked out the hump computers closing the hump the day before.
