Heard this term (in various forms) being used over the years but I've never seen it fully explained.

Sounds like more meaningless corporate buzz-words to me. Before I retired, I had an entire book filled with just such empty phrases, all gleaned from corporate communications, all sadly comical. All of them contained adjectives such as "core," "strategic," "key," "role," just to name a few: All are what we commonly know as "bullsh*t." The MBA's (Masters of Business Annihilation) have created their own language, in a great attempt to impress and fool each other. Just my two cents, anyway.

Best thing about phrases like that is assembling them to play Buzzword Bingo!

We used a similar term to describe business which had a price that covered its servicing needs and the cost of capital needed to deliver that business.

For CSX it likely refers to the cost of servicing recurring and predictable business. Compared to one off or occasional business coming off a branch not otherwise needed.

Almost as bad as what I call "socialworkerspeak" ....

One of the FriscoBN managers in Seattle had an apparent limited grasp on English as a first language, one might say. He would regularly talk of servicing, meaning serving, the customers - as BN was driving them away as fast as they could. On a particularly unbearably disgusting day, he said that and as I walked off, I said Yeah, right. I took a horse to be serviced one time and I saw what happened to it.

I'm pretty sure that he heard it, but didn't say a thing then or thereafter.

In 1968, Newsweek magazine published a short, but humorous article, How to Win at Wordsmanship. It described the "Systematic Buzz Phrase Projector," a concept developed by Philip Broughton, a (then) 63 year old worker in the US Public Health Service. He must have had a delightful sense of humor.

We here at the Acronym Finder have implemented Broughton's Systematic Buzz Phrase Projector (SBPP if you like) as a fun way of not only randomly generating his buzz phrases, but also (what else?), the corresponding acronyms and abbreviations they form.

Broughton's system uses this three-column list of 30 cleverly chosen buzzwords.

To use the SBPP, just make up a 3 digit number and then choose the numbered buzzword from each column. So, if you chose 031, you would get Integrated Reciprocal Flexibility (IRF). Try it for yourself.


The idea was to drop these random buzz phrase nuggets into conversation or technical reports. Broughton said "No one will have the remotest idea of what you are talking about, but the important thing is that they're not about to admit it."

Even after 49 years, they still sound amazingly jargon-like, don't they? Enjoy!

In the sporting world, my (least) favourite is "physicality".

There are several reasons the revenue per car can increase. The tons per car may go up. The miles per car may go up. The rate per car may go up. The so called core price just focuses on the rate per car.

I've never heard that definition. Proud to have a BS in Transportation (Tennessee) since 1966.
