Frankfort, IN Questions
Author: CSXT_8437

Good Evening:

How many trains does NS run per day through Frankfort, IN and what are the symbols? Is this route cleared for doublestacks?

Thank you in advance.

Not a busy line. Here are the scheduled trains:

123 Decatur, IL - Linwood, NC
124 Cincinnati, OH - Decatur, IL
17K Bellevue, OH - Frankfort, IN
34Z Decatur, IL - Frankfort, IN

Plus occasional unit grain trains.

I wonder what route this takes. In the old days it would have been simple.

Appreciate it. Now I wonder what traffic goes from Bellevue to Frankfort.

Just curious, how do the cars and power work their way out of Frankfurt with no originating move?

When I was a student at Purdue in the early 60's, I used to see a steady stream of Nickel Plate freights through Lafayette. I knew the west bound trains were headed for Peoria IL, and the eastbound trains were headed to Frankfort, but from there I was not sure how they were routed. What were the possible routings east of Frankfort?

I was told either yard transfers or locals shuttle outbound traffic to Lafayette South Yard.

Thanks!  Wish I could have seen it in NKP days.

From Frankfort East to Sandusky via Muncie, Lima, Fostoria. Via Lake Erie & Western District.

The photo was one I took last year passing through Lima. It is looking East as the ex NKP crossed the ex DT&I at a junction called Morris. Automated in the 50s. In 1953 there were about 10 trains each way on the NKP here. Today much of the line is ripped up, tracks here don't continue east to much further (nor west).

If you're very lucky and EHH hasn't totally killed the ADM business CSX one had, you *may* see CSX's weekday entrance into Frankfort as the J776 is supposed to work ADM M-F. If things are working normally (not often nowadays, sadly) it arrives mid-day from Indianapolis and departs in the early-mid afternoon.

Might be better if the Indy-Frankfort line was sold to a short line. once it got to Indy perhaps the Indiana Rail Road or the Louisville & Indiana could forward it from there.
