NYC And A Couple Of Sole Providers
Author: NSSpike

If you don't catch it this time not to worry cause it will be back. Not always the case!! However with certain trains when the power is assigned it can be for multiple runs. Even better when the head end power gets turned so East / West or North / South increases your photo opportunities each time. Such is the case when head end power is assigned to NS 26A (VANCE ALA - BRUNSWICK GA) auto rack train. A while back a pair of consecutive numbered Tri-Clops units were assigned for the better part of a month. Position such that no turning of the power was required.

Currently the NS Heritage Unit New York Central #1066 is assigned to this service that runs on the NS Alabama East End District.

#1. East bound move into CP Bremen paired up with another NS unit operating as NS 26A

#2. West bound move on the main past CP Baggett heading into downtown Villa Rica Ga.opperating as NS 27A

more to follow....

Of late there were a couple of NS moves that had only a single unit providing then power for these moves.

#3. Holding the siding just west of CP Winston NS #3609 GE ETC44AC leads train NS 290 (MCCALLA, AL - CROXTON, NJ)

#4. In the early morning hours a rather dirty Dash 9-44CW NS #9553 leads NS 69C (ATLANTA, GA Argos USA – ROBERTA,ALA. ) 74 empty cement hoppers west bound through Douglasville Ga.

After posting this thread and photo I am reminded of the time this supposedly empty west bound cement hopper train was short on power. But first a little background. Typically east bound loads 68C run with four head end units with three on line and 80 loads. On the NS Georgia Division these trains will run toward Inman on track #2 and stop at the Magnolia lead north of Bolton at CP Bridge so the conductor, after removing the EOT can ride the rear car shove down into the Argos USA plant. For well over a year east bound cement hopper Alabama crews would be contacted by the dispatcher to find out if they were “Magnolia” qualified. If not arrangements were made to get someone out of Inman to assist with the shove.

Although I don't know for sure I believe a yard job retrieves the empties and assembles the train for the return trip west bound out of Inman as 69C. On one such trip with a single Dash-9 the train made it out of Austell and by the time it reached Douglasville the 92 car train was barely able to do 10mph. In the siding at Winston an east bound train did a roll by inspection looking for what everyone thought might be a few set hand brakes. Not the case. They found 11 loaded hoppers with truck springs bottomed out. Turns out the customer had placed the 11 loads into an out bound track in error. Needless to say there was a plenty of communications on what to do with the 11 loads. Eventually 69C managed to get a second KCS engine off of an east bound stack and continued west bound. Not sure what they did with the loads? This time it was an error on the customers part!
