Tough Railfanning Pennsylvania / Ohio
Author: train1275

Went out Saturday morning to check out some action in Western Pennsylvania / Eastern Ohio along the old LS&MS (CSX) and NKP (NS). It was a cold 18 degrees to start the day with a biting wind off Lake Erie. Although sunny, the light was harsh and never in the right place at the right time.

Amtrak 48 was running about 4 hours late so a stop was made at North East, PA to the Lake Shore Railway Museum for a shot of it passing the depot. The word was it was delayed in Ohio due to some drawbridge issues but it sure took its time from Painesville to North East where it crossed from Track 2 over to 1. On the platform to greet it were a group of cub scouts touring the museum, all bundled up against the cold air.

1. Just prior to Amtrak 48 was this CSX eastbound auto rack train.

2. Finally Amtrak 48 shows after stopping at the CP to the west and then crossing over. Here it accelerates east towards its' next station stop in Buffalo, NY.

3. The markers on the baggage car advertise the lateness of 48 as it disappears east past the museum grounds.

Photo 4: Continuing west a stop was made at Conneaut, Ohio to check for action on the Bessemer & Lake Erie. All was quiet as fishermen enjoyed the solitude on the West Branch of Conneaut Creek.

Photo 5: Up in town a CSX eastbound slams through with stacks led by ET44AH 3295.

Photo 6: NKP / NS Heritage. An NS unit leads a westbound CSX freight and is stopped at Conneaut beside NKP 755, both engines being a few blocks away from their true home rails.

Photo 7: NS 7274 poses beside the old Lake Shore & Michigan Southern depot, now a museum. It is a long way from original home grounds on Union Pacific, built as UP 8046 an ill fated SD9043Mac.

Photo 8: Further west for a view of the NS (NKP) Ashtabula River Bridge, an imposing structure but just missed an eastbound by about 5 minutes, so no train here. Don't seem to see many photos taken of this bridge.

Photo 9: Back at North East for the days sunset, a CP Rail eastbound on CSX comes out of the glow of the setting sun. Traffic was sporadic and erratic and the light was at all times very challenging making for some degree of frustration.

Maybe some of the issues also had to do with this incident at Westfield, NY.

Seems CSX 726 had an issue with the #6 wheelset. Not sure just what, but on Sunday morning R. J. Corman was on-site to repair it. Obviously frustration was not just limited to railfanning.
