Eastern Railroad Discussion > NS Portage Bridge is nearing completionDate: 11/14/17 04:59 NS Portage Bridge is nearing completion Author: JPB A posting on the NS D&H South and Southern Tier Lines Facebook page says the new Portage Bridge is targeted to be cut into service by NS on November 28, 2017 (ie, two weeks from now)!
https://www.facebook.com/groups/dandhsouthline/ In somewhat related news, the ex-NKP Painesville trestle is also being being replaced on NS' line from Bellevue to New England via Buffalo/Binghamton: http://www.news-herald.com/general-news/20171112/painesvilles-norfolk-and-southern-railroad-bridge-project-pertinent-to-regional-rail-system Edited 1 time(s). Date: 11/14/17 10:10 Re: NS Portage Bridge is nearing completion Author: CPR_4000 I can't find the document online, but when NS was trying to get state/federal help to replace Portageville they projected putting all sorts of traffic on the Southern Tier, including trains to the New York Terminal (via Susquehanna at Campbell Hall, IIRC).

If it comes to pass, they would go via Suffern. They lease Suffern to Port and have rights over Transit. The NYSW does not go to Croxton as directly as the Erie. I can't imagine that Transit would welcome many long stack trains and mixed freights, especially during daylight. On the other hand, looking at the map it appears that a new connection and backup move would be needed to access Croxton from the Susquehanna. Apparently CSX is using the old Susquehanna stack terminal in Ridgefield Park? Date: 11/14/17 11:18 Re: NS Portage Bridge is nearing completion Author: NYSWSD70M CPR_4000 Wrote:

Stacks would run at night anyway causing little in the way of interference. NS told me that there are advantages to using the Erie (primarily no trackage rights fees to Conrail) for a Croxton bound stack. They just don't have the volume. CSX now owns Little Ferry.
