Fall Trip On The CNO&TP Day 2
Author: NSSpike

Saturday morning we departed Harriman TN and headed north up US27 for the 100+ mile trip toward Burnside KY.
Friday evening and into early Saturday morning the line into Emory Gap was hopping with a good number of trains passing through town. However radio traffic was lite as we headed north this morning under somewhat clear skies that would begin to cloud up into the afternoon hours.

Our first stop of the day was at CP Revilo MP 194.7 just south of the Southfork Coal Co. loading facility.
#10 NS 143 (ELKHART, IN – BIRMINGHAM, AL) south bound on track #1.

#11. NS 179 (BELLEVUE, OH – BIRMINGHAM, AL) would follow on track #2 at CP Revilo.

Farther north a stop at Wilborg KY would find another south bound manifest.
#12 NS 175 (BELLEVUE, OH – MACON, GA.) on the single track around MP 187

#13. On a house track just south of CP Cumberland Falls MP 181.5 we found this D9-44CW with a track panel car.

#14. With the NS #1152 leading NS 275 (SHELBYVILLE, KY-ATLANTA,GA) this south bound auto-rack on main #2 clears the signal bridge at CP Tateville MP 169.6 just south of Burnside.

Radio traffic from the Kentucky dispatcher indicated NS 112 would be departing the crew change point at Burnside so we headed to the north side of the Cumberland River Bridge on US27 to capture it. Not knowing which main it would be on we set up for a north bound move over the river.

#15. NS 56G loaded grain train south bound over the Cumberland River on main # 2. Didn't get to see the north bound NS 112 as he ran on main #1. We should have set up on the south end of the US27 bridge as the light would have been better for either shot.

At this point it was time to head back south into the Daniel Boone National Forrest to some of the rock cuts before they fell into total shade.

#16. Off the Keno Road bridge our first north bound of the day would be NS 27K on main #2 just past the IM signals at MP 174.3 as the tracks were starting to be consumed by the shade.

#17. On main #2 south bound NS 229 (COLUMBUS, OH – JACKSONVILLE, FLA) rounds the curve at MP 174. As high as we were on the bridge over the tracks the engineer still managed to acknowledge our presence with a series of horn blasts.

#18. As NS 224 (ATLANTA, GA – KANSAS CITY, MO) heads north on main #1 as NS 229 heads south on main #2

After we arrived at the next location we found out in short order... Today was opening day for the deer hunters in Kentucky!!! So we stayed right at the road crossing.

#19 NS 56G south bound loaded grain train on main #2 at Buck Knob Tower Road.

#20 NS 55G north bound empty grain train on main #2 MP 177 just south of KD Tower

With the golden hour about to ascend upon us on our way back to base camp there was one more train to catch.
#21 NS 130 (NEW ORLEANS, LA – BELLEVUE, ON) on main #1 at Adams Ridge Rd just north of Lancing TN MP 236

As I indicated in a post covering our spring trip to the area and again on this trip, NS train crews and other personnel on this line segment are the most rail fan friendly you will find anywhere for a Class 1 railroad hands down. And they always make sure to remind you to be safe and SMART when out and about track side!!! Can't ask for anything more then that!! Special thanks are in order to Travis Taylor our guide for both our spring and fall trips to the CNO&TP. Many of you know Travis as a result of his involvement in the early days of ATCS and his background in helping set up radio feeds from various locations here in the southeast. In fact this week Travis is in the Chattanooga area at the TVR working with Mike Cyr and the folks at Virtual Railfan setting up radio feeds for the NS & CSX in that part of the country. Can't thank Travis enough for his efforts in learning the CNO&TP so as to maximize our time spent getting from location to location. His knowledge in photography skills have also been a big plus to those of us on the trip!!! Thanks Travis

And a closing comment. If you are ever considering a trip to the CNO&TP there are several great posts on TO from the past on this area of the country that are worth reviewing. Use the search feature and begin planning your trip!!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful photos. I particularly enjoyed your photos from your spot high on that bridge. I am going to have to put this on my bucket list.

John thanks for the reply. There are actually two overhead bridges over the double tracks of the CNO&TP within the Daniel Boone National Forest.
Keno Road at the north end and Shelton Road at the south end.
Photo below is looking north / south at Shelton Road.
