Who is busier Birmingham-New Orleans?
Author: twropr

CSX (former L&N) or NS (former SOU)?
How many trains are added to CSX below Montgomery (where the former A&WP ties in) and below Flomaton (where the line from Jacksonville ties in)?
Thanks!
Andy

The A&WP adds one train south to New Orleans, Q611, other traffic from that line either terminates at Montgomery or gets routed north to Birmingham.

The NS line is by far busier, especially around Birmingham.

Here’s the average train density along the NS line:

•New Orleans, LA - Meridian, MS: 10 freight, 2 Amtrak plus road locals based in Nicholson, Hattiesburg and Meridian, MS
•Meridian, MS - Vance, AL: 19 freight, 2 Amtrak plus road locals based in Hattiesburg, MS
•Vance, AL - Bessemer, AL: 21 freight, 2 Amtrak plus road locals based in Tuscaloosa, AL.
•Bessemer, AL - Birmingham, AL: 28 freight, 2 Amtrak plus road locals based in Tuscaloosa and Bessemer, AL

Here’s the average train density along the CSX line:

•New Orleans, LA - Mobile, AL: 8 freight
•Mobile, AL - Flomaton, AL: 12 freight plus road locals based in Mobile, AL
•Flomaton, AL - Montgomery, AL: 8 freight plus road locals based in Flomaton and Montgomery, AL
•Montgomery, AL - Birmingham, AL: 9 freight plus road locals based in Montgomery and Calera, AL

As for trains entering exiting the CSX line:

•6 New Orleans - Waycross trains exit and 2 Pensacola - Birmingham trains enter at Flomaton, AL
•2 New Orleans - Atlanta trains exit, 2 Waycross - Chicago trains enter, and 1 Baldwin - Louisville rack train enter at Montgomery, AL

Thanks FL581.  What a change from the early '70's when I lived in Birmingham.  Mid morning I could count on from Norris Yd bham #115 (MP/KCS run-thru), #193 (SP run-thru and #153 (Oliver Yrd termination) and 3B #183 to Mobile.  Similar trains ran north.  The L&N back then had a few more trains than SOU going to New Orleans.

I didn’t forget about them. Those are all included in the NS train counts. The two Atlanta trains I was referring to were CSX trains Q610 and Q611 that depart the Birmingham - New Orleans Main at Montgomery.
