It was a very interesting morning at the CSX Howell yard in Evansville this morning. The Evansville & Western Local was using SD40-2 6002 and 6003 to deliver and pick up the daily exchanges. Later the empty coal train that left yesterday morning to make it’s way to a coal mine on the EVWR returned with a loaded train to turn it over to CSX for a run to South Carolina. There was another empty coal train waiting on the Broadway siding to make the same run down the EVWR to the same mine.

While all of this EVWR action was going on, CSX Q648 was waiting to continue its run to Chicago. The train was over 10,000 ft long and weighed better than 10,000 tons. Pulling the train was an ES44AC-H (776), a SD40-3 (4018) and a MT15T (1213). The plan was for this train to pick up 7,000 ft., 7,000 tons of cars at Terre Haute, IN. Now how was that supposed to work?

With no setoffs somewhere? 17,000ft would be the longest train I've heard reported.

Maybe they plan to fire up the 1213 for additional power?

A lot of the coal traffic from EVWR goes to Florida power plants.

Today's CSX: replacing SD50s and Dash-8s with MP15s as road power. Can't say I'm complaining!
