A Sign That Times Are Changing
Author: NSSpike

While out and about Sunday mid day I was surprised to see coal hoppers staged at the Austell Box Board plant.
Haven't seen coal hoppers placed at this facility in what seams like forever. Times are changing right before our eyes!!!

Are these stored or does the customer receive coal? I noticed they are bottom dump cars, not rotary only.

Oh yeah, they receive coal via bottom dump hoppers. Note the conveyor between the two storage silos. Burn coal to heat the water for the cardboard recycle business.

Great to see coal hoppers in use in something other than a unit train!

Look for Reading & Northern anthracite hopper cars - they are seen individually or in small herds in NS freights.

R&N hoppers are regularly seen on NS 337 (loads) and 338 (empties) to North Charleston SC. The consignee is on Virginia Ave, near the I-526 Don Holt bridge, serviced by the Reeds Branch locals (P21/P46).. Anywhere from 1 to 3 carloads seen at a time.

Not to "derail" the post, but a small group of RBMN hoppers have been spotted on back and forth thru Keyser, WV in CSX Trains Q317 / Q316... grabbed this in Q316 on 12 Jan 2018...

since RBMN cannot interchange directly with CSX this means The route is RBMN-NS-CSX over some junction, which I would suspect is Hagerstown, MD. (In old days it would have been Lurgan, PA the old RDG/WM thru route, over 20 trains a day in the 1960's.
