Eastern Railroad Discussion > Over / Under, Side X Side.... in less than an hour - 09 Feb 2018

Every Friday I pick up #4 son at his mother's after he gets home from school and we normally chase a train of two before we head to my house. This past Friday we caught scanner traffic between CSX Dispatcher "BF" and a couple of trains around Keyser, WV.

Q317 had finished up making their set-outs at Keyser and was updating BF with car locations in the yard at Keyser and was departing west. N999-09 called up wanting to know where to tie down their train when they reached Keyser. Being we were in Westernport, MD we head over to Bloomington thinking maybe a shot could be had of the 317 and 999 around that area.

Our spot at Bloomington sit between two signals, "The Woodyard" to the east and "Warnick's Curve" to the west. Q317 called the Piedmont Signal (east of the wood yard signal) and shortly N999 called the Crabtree signal (west of Warnick's). At this point I knew they would meet somewhere west of our location.

Q317 coming west, called "the Woodyard" and then passed us.


1) Q317-09 westbound on 17-Mile Grade at Bloomington, MD at 4:18 pm..


With Q317 out of the picture we decide to stay at Bloomington to catch the N999-09 and chase it into Keyser, WV.... Then we catch B772 talking to "BF" about their movements in Keyser... They are coming east behind the N999.

In quick order N999-09 goes over the Defect Detector on track #2 at Warnick's, and B772-09 calls the signal "Restricted Proceed" at Crabtree..... so we'll catch 2 trains at Bloomington, one right after the other.

But then U051-06 starts calling the Junction switcher. Trains coming east off the Thomas Subdivision will call up the Junction Switcher ( B770 Crews ) to make sure they are in the clear..

With U051 in the picture, this changes our plans.. We head for Beryl, WV and try for the Over / Under shot there.

2) 4:45 pm. at Beryl, WV N999-09 heads east descending 17-Mile Grade. U051 is just out of sight to the right.

3) N999-09 overhead on Former B&O tracks with the U051-09 on the former Western Maryland tracks below.

N999-09 over U051-06 at Beryl, WV

N999-09 will tie down at Keyser and the crew will taxi to Cumberland and mark off. A following drag later that evening will arrive in Keyser and combine the 2 trains before continuing east.

U051-06 is a set of empty hoppers from the Mt. Storm Power Station. They will also tie down at Keyser and the crew will mark off there. A new crew will taxi out of Cumberland to Keyser to take the empties west to Grafton later that night.

With N999-09 cleared Piedmont, we turn our attention to the B772-09. We know the U051 is on the Interchange Track and we should get lucky and grab a photo of them and the B772 at Piedmont. With N999 tying down on track #2 at Keyser, that leaves only track #1 for the B772 and U051 to use to reach the yard.

We arrive at Piedmont and neither of them are there yet....

The 6 yr old makes the Comment "wouldn't it be cool if they coming beside each other"

5:02 pm.... B772-09 (left) and U051-06 (right) arrive at Piedmont, WV.....

U051 has the light off the Interchange track as the B772 has to stop at the signal.

I guess it would be better if it was video....

1) B772-09 slows to a stop as the U051-06 continues east off the Interchange Track at Piedmont, WV

2) B875-08 Helpers on the rear of the U051-06 passing the B772-09 at Piedmont, WV.

Once at Keyser, the power on the east end of the U051 will cut away and protect the shove on track #2 east of the plant as the helper crew shoves their train into the eastbound siding.

3) Sitting and waiting their turn.... 5:12 pm. - B772-09 waits for their turn to enter the yard at Keyser. Once at Keyser, they will tie their train down for the Q316 to pick up later the next morning.
