"MA&N's Carthage, NY Job"
Author: ut-1

I ventured up to Carthage, NY today to catch the Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern's No. 2454, an Alco C425, at work.

Carthage is located in far northern New York state, not too far from Canada.

Here's a video showing some of today's activity.

Several pictures will follow as well.

Photo 2. No. 2454 about to exit engine house.

Photo 6. Another look.

Photo 7. "U74" Utica (NY) 74 rail miles to the south. But....You can't get there from here anymore as the NY Central removed the tracks between U45 (Lyons Falls) and U59 (Lowville) in the early 1960's.

Winter railroading at its best. Not for the faint of heart.

Great photos and video. What business is left Lowville north? Is there anything left of the Benson Miles branch?

The only customers on the line now are in Carthage. I’ve been informed the bridge over the Black River at U74 is no longer safe to run over. I keep hearing rumblings that something is underfoot on the N Falls (Benson Mines) line but don’t know any specifics.

I've been involved in an environmental cleanup investigation at Benson, and there's been significant work on it. They claim they can get all the way up to the mine now.

Owner is looking at possibly shipping frac sand out (based on the former sand-like mine waste piles which are quite large, to say the least). We may need to ship cement and fly ash in, depending on what cleanup strategy we choose.
