Some photos from my trip to the Southeast
Author: sscannella

Spent 12 days from 1/31-2/11 touring the Southeastern corner of the country with my wife (later joined by my son and daughter when we hit Orlando). Mainly a mid-winter break for us from the cold and snow of the northeast, but I was able to take in some railroad and transportation related sights along the way.

We started with a short break in Roanoke, VA while traveling from Harrisburg, PA to Columbia, SC on 1/31, which yielded this returning local with a pair of SD40-2s seen from the 10th St overpass.

From the other direction we saw three of NS's stored gensets, and then from Williamson Road overpass I caught the battery-powered unit.

From Columbia it was on to Charleston, SC, then Savannah, GA, where we took a riverboat trip on the Savannah and saw these container ships and the tug which aid the container ships and barges in the river...

We made a stop by the Georgia State Railroad Museum in Savannah. Unfortunately most of the equipment was in the roundhouse. Over by the Amtrak station, there was nothing around but this Sperry Car tied down.

On Saturday morning, 2/3 in St. Augustine, I was able to catch a little Forida East Coast action, including what I think was 230 with three GP4-s in the power consist crossing the San Sebastian River...

Another view of the 230, before we headed south to Key West for a few days.

On the way back from Key West, I stopped to grab a couple shots of the old FEC Bahia Honda Key bridge, part of the FEC oversea extension wiped out by the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane. This area then suffered additional damage from Hurricane Irma this past September.

Then while traveling north from Florida City to Orlando via Lake Okeechobee on Tuesday 2/6, I was hoping to get some of the US Sugar operations in the area. I heard some chatter from some crews on the scanner, but was never able to find a train moving in the short time we were there, though I did manage to get some power by the shops in Clewistown.

I was hoping to get one of the cane trains on this bridge over the Miami Canal at Lake Harb or, but it looks like I'll have to wait until the fall or next winter. We did catch several gators in the canal.

It wasn't a complete bust though, as we came across US Sugar's South Central Florida Express turn to Fort Pierce returning on the east side of Lake Okeechobee at Port Mayaca.

When the kids joined us in Orlando, we spent some time at a few of the parks, including Epcat, where no visit of mine is complete without a couple shots of the Monorail.

On Saturday 2/10, I started a solo drive north back to Harrisburg, PA after dropping the kids and my wife off at the Orlando-Sanford airport for their return flight home. I then made it to St. Augustine at daybreak, where an hour wait helped most of the early morning fog burn off and I was able to get a few shots of what I think was FEC 226 heading north.

My final stop of the afternoon of 2/10 was in Columbia, SC, where before a brief visit with my nephew there, I stopped by CSX's Cayce Yard to grab a few images. It appeares taht a few of the ill-fated Amtrak 91's cars from the Super Bowl Sunday morning wreck were stored there.

Finally, on the other side of the river near the NS yard, I came across the CSX Geometry train parked for the weekend.

What is the flatbed type unit in between the FEC power (latter series of FEC pics)? Almost looks like it should be a fuel tender??

It is a natural gas tender. The FEC ES44 units are designed to run on a mix of LNG and diesel.

Great views of a wide variety of subjects! The container ships and Key West bridge are especially nice.

I saw several other FEC trains at night. Only one did not have a fuel tender between the two GEs.
