Eastern Railroad Discussion > Union Pacific SD40's on the Water Level RouteDate: 03/19/18 14:01 Union Pacific SD40's on the Water Level Route Author: NTBolton Sunday, March 18th graced Northwest Ohio with just about everything a railfan could ask for. Warm(er) temperatures, cloudless skies, and lots of action. The highlight of the day absolutely being Norfolk Southern train 14A (Chicago, IL - Conway, PA manifest) with an unlikely duo of Union Pacific SD40-2's at the front of a 7-unit consist. The train, which brought a sizable group of 7 or 8 people to the Wales Road overpass alone, was tracked by multiple people all day as it rolled east through Indiana and into Ohio. It made its way into Toledo around 3 PM and left roughly 2 hours later, but even with nose light almost completely gone, I figured it was still worth the chase.
Photo #1: 14A rolling through Vickers Junction at Northwood on the east side of Toledo. Photo #2: At the other side of the Wales Rd. overpass, 14A meets two other trains waiting to head west. Photo #3: Rolling over the Sandusky Bay bridge at Bay View in some excellent evening light. The photo really doesn't do the justice of how massive the bridge actually is; my photo probably doesn't even capture a quarter of it. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/19/18 14:14 by NTBolton. Date: 03/19/18 14:06 Re: Union Pacific SD40's on the Water Level Route Author: NTBolton Photo #4: 14A rolled pretty slow all the way from Toledo, so slow that another eastbound train actually overtook it between Sandusky and Huron, Ohio, where we found ourselves for our next shot. In this photo, a westbound freight speeds past our location with an NS GE leading a colorful trio of locomotives into the late evening sun. This was the second train to fly past before the anticipated 14A made its way through.
Photo #5: 14A breezes through the NYC tri-light signals at Huron less than an hour before sunset, still cooking at a cool 30-or-so miles per hour. Photo #6: As a bonus in the morning before we set out for Toledo, we managed to grab CSX K144-15 at North Baltimore, OH sporting a trio of orange motors, the first of which donned the BNSF's "Heritage 1" paint scheme. Thanks for viewing. Nick Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 03/19/18 18:31 by NTBolton. Date: 03/19/18 15:17 Re: Union Pacific SD40's on the Water Level Route Author: refarkas WOW! Out Date: 03/19/18 17:23 Re: Union Pacific SD40's on the Water Level Route Author: Milwaukee It's been a very long time since I've seen evidence of a UP SD40-2 in pool service. I figured those no longer left the UP rails.
