"NYS&W Plow Extra" Utica, NY Branch
Author: ut-1

New York, Susquehanna & Western ran a plow extra on its Utica, NY branch today from Utica-Sangerfield, 23 miles. I believe this is the first time the O.F. Jordan plow was used on the branch since 2016.

Here's a video.

Photo 1. The work train reaches Paris Station, crest of Paris Hill's 1.8% grade.

Photo 2. A few minutes later, the plow extra passes a farm in Waterville, NY.

Something I've always wondered - generally speaking, how much snow do the railroads allow to accumulate before calling out the plows? How about the rotaries?

Pretty stupid that they can't run a train in 6" of snow. That was a waste of time, and  fuel to do that.upkpfan

There may have been drifts or areas of deeper accumulation that we didn’t see.

I remember back in the early 60's being called out one night account train stalled in snow drift (Paris Hill) and it was also the first day of baseball season!

I can remember riding the caboose of the Conrail local between Richfield Jct and Waterville and coming out of Cassville the snow drifts were as high as the cupola.
