"Never on Sunday?" NYS&W Utica, NY Branch
Author: ut-1

Weekend moves on the New York, Susquehanna & Western's Utica, NY line have been practically non-existent in recent years.

However, this is the busy time on the line, as traffic swells each spring to meet the demands of agricultural customers in Waterville and Sangerfield, over 20 miles south of Utica.

Two engines are assigned to the branch in the spring to help move the traffic up Paris Hill's 1.8% grade. Normally, NYS&W GP40 No. 3040, the Utica line's mainstay, is limited to taking 7 loads up the hill. With another engine, this year once again leased CSX GP38-2 No. 2782, up to 14 loads are taken south.

No. 3040 was off the branch for a few weeks resulting in a backlog of cars in the Utica yard. Now back on the line, Nos. 3040 and 2782 have been working weekends to catch up.

The crew worked today as well, with Nos. 2782 and 3040 taking 13 cars, mostly covered hoppers, to consignees in southern Oneida County.

This video shows NYS&W's UT-1 heading up Paris Hill in Clayville, NY, on arrival in Sangerfield, and returning light to Utica as seen from an overpass in Clayville.

Several photos also follow.

At 1:40 on the video, I see a guy picking something off the rail. I wonder if he laid coins on the rail? Well done video, I especially liked the part at Paris.
