I remember back years ago when we had excursion trips from Baltimore using the ex-B&O equipment from RRP and the two Western Maryland passenger cars, the 150 combine and the 200 coach. Those were fun times and a very scenic ride up to Hagerstown via Jack's Mountain.

The construction of the Western Maryland's cut was either being excavated for the right-of-way or the track was in the process of being laid; I don't know which, but would be interested in finding out. During that time, some of the Confederates had been trapped and captured in the cut by the Union army. That is what the present memorial represents. In the movie, "Gettysburg," there is a short act that verbally mentions that specific event. Matthew |
