X415 derailed on the RF&P bridge that crosses the NS Washington District. Both lines are damaged. 30+ cars down. No injuries

Does NS run anything on that line anymore? I think the VRE trains do not cross under that bridge, and the power plant that received coal via that route closed.

Thank you in advance.

VRE uses the "Horn" track to get from NS to CSX rails, you are correct they do not run under the bridge. NS still has a presence in their yard in Alexandria but it is certainly significantly reduced from the past.

Mostly for storage of ethanol cars these days. No more coal traffic with the demise of the generating station at Alexandria.

News reports say crew was not injured. Just a conjecture, but how would they detour freight traffic around this? Since the horn track looks unaffected, could they reroute over NS to Orange, then Buckingham Branch back to CSX? That would make for some interesting train watching!

I was wondering samething. I guess NB trains could go around at Richmond and go up the James River Sub to Clifton Forge and west. My guess is low priority stuff might be held away. Acca is a bottleneck and I doubt they can hold trains there

Other reports note washouts and single tracking on the RF&P north of Ashland VA. So, CSX may already be rationing its own operations there.

First reports here were that the bridge came down, and trains would be stopped and tied down even on the Philly Sub. I have the TT, was familiar with the area years ago. at that time SOU thru freights in and out of old Potomac Yard did go under the bridge and I think there were two tracks. SOU's Van Dorn intermodal yard was just south. But looking at the photo attached, it looks like the X415 was NB on track one it also looks like one span came down RFP is 3 tracks there, #1 is like a very long siding. Tracks two and three are the thru main tracks to Richmond. It also shows what mat be a bit of the track two bridge above. So if two and three can be cleared and declared safe the route may be resored rather quickly. And recent talk here indicates that is the case. I do not think VRE runs weekends, and there is one less AMTK train on Sat and Sun. AF interlocking is north of there and all passenger trains and NS freight moves can get around this. Please forgive misspellings or grammer, I'm just trying to inform, I have eye issues.

Massive land slide due to eight days of rain caused this derailment according a contact at CSX.

Only Amtrak and VRE trains which run on the RF&P Sub are affected. VRE trains to Manassas, Amtrak's Crescent and the train to Roanoke are not affected since they use the Horn Track from AF Tower to the NS main.

Northeast Regional 156 Roanoke to New York is cancelled and parked back on the storage track due to CSX derailment per communication Amtrak conductor and NS Roanoke dispatcher.

Thank you. I thought X415 would be a southbound train.

X415 and Q415 run between Rocky Mount NC and Cumberland MD, and are classified as west bound trains on CSX.

That's different than previous years when the q416 was a Rocky Mt to Cumberland train. It was always an oddball odd numbered symbol running west on the Cumberland Sub. Sometimes this train continued on to Willard at times.

Look here, Q/X 415 are south bound trains http://railroadfan.com/wiki/index.php/CSX_Train_Symbols. That site is constantly updated.
