Less CSX thru Atlanta?
Author: twropr

I was in north GA this past weekend and noticed that almost all the radio transmissions I picked up on the scanner in the Atlanta area were from NS. This brings up the question as to whether part of the EHH plans was to divert Midwest/Southeast traffic from Atlanta to Birmingham and just bring into Atlanta the traffic for that area.
Thanks!
Andy

That's the impression I get... The K&A is seldom-used, and the Nashville-Birmingham-Manchester routing is in first-class condition.

It’s looking like CSX is bypassing Atlanta. Even the CSX Q142/Q143 pairs of intermodals are no longer going through Atlanta. They’ll come up to Fairburn, run around their trains, then head back to LaGrange to catch the Lineville Sub heading either north for B’ham or south for Manchester.

You've got to wonder about the W&A lease, and even beyond that to the Nashville & Chattanooga line.

There is far less traffic on CSX in Atlanta than ever before. The W&A south of Cartersville sees less than 10 scheduled trains a day now. Q028/029, Q580/581, Q210/211 and Q542/541. Of course there is coal, grain, ethanol, extras or reroutes thrown in the mix as well as local A703 but bottom-line; traffic is sparse these days.

Why would Q142 and Q143 run via Birmingham? That makes no sense. How many trains per day now run via the W&A and K&A Subdivisions?

Maybe if CSXT is running fewer trains via Atlanta NS will have a better time getting trains across the CSXT Chattanooga Subdivision between Chattanooga, TN and Stevenson, AL.

Thank you in advance.

The irony is, at last it's feasible to run passenger trains Chattanooga-Atlanta on CSX. Since 1979 both NS and CSX have been so busy between Chattanooga and Atlanta that any kind of train, including a Chicago-Atlanta-Florida train, was unthinkable. But meanwhile, one wonders just how committed to existing LD trains Amtrak actually is... and clearly they're not in the mood to add one.

How has that affected the CSX traffic thru Dalton ?

Last week in a flight to Atlanta, we overflew the Tilford Yard site on final approach. It appeared to have been completely removed. I see a bleak future for CSX on the lines north of Atlanta.

If there are less than 10 scheduled trains per day south of Cartersville, then there are fewer than that going through Dalton on CSXT, since some traffic would go to the K&A at Cartersville. The NS would be the busier of the two lines through Dalton. CSXT controls the diamond, and with fewer CSXT trains, it should cause fewer delays to NS.

Corporate belt tightening makes sense in this day and age to stay relevant and competitive. Sucks for us photographers though.

Has Q142/143 always worked Nashville? If so, this new routing does make sense since it’s likely easier to run around the train at the Fairburn ramp than it is in the Nashville one.

I did not realize the profile changed to work Nashville. It would make sense then.

Thanks for dalton info. Will be down there in about a week, in the past, had good luck with plenty of trains passing thru there.
