Atlanta's Terminal Station South Tower Torn Down
Author: NS7214

This morning the only remaining structure from the once grand Atlanta Terminal Station was torn down, there was no trying to save it as it was it's structural integrity had long went away. The tower had been sinking and cracking in half the last several years. Urban outdoorsmen has never helped either. There is a section of station canopy remaining, about 200' worth.

Getting ready for redevelopment?

I think the tower is in the southern tip of the Gulch.

Does anyone have a photo of the station and Tower in its glory days?

Is this the tower I see between Nelson and Mitchell Streets?

Yes it was the same one. My father has shots of it during the early 60s and some other guys shot scenes there as well.

Was it owned by NS or CSXT?

I took a few pics of the tower last year. The third pic is the back side of the old NS building which is STILL sitting empty and waiting for some fool to get trapped into paying a ton of money to turn it into condos or apts. which no one can afford to rent.

Some fool is going to make off like a bandit when Amazon locates in the Gulch.

Thanks for posting those sad pictures. Hopefully someone can share some from better days.

I doubt Amazon will locate in "the Gulch" if they choose to grace Atlanta with their HQ2 building.

If they do, you heard it here first.

If not, never mind.

I took pic.number 2 out in front of the NS building as I walked around to get pictures of the front. There were several of these markers at the edge of the sidewalk next to the street.

With the size of the building they plan is there any room? One concern Amazon mentioned was the traffic congestion Atlanta seems to have and a real lack of mass transit.

You're probably right, but the Gulch has railroad tracks right throw it which have experienced a drop in traffic. The right people can make things happen if they get behind it.

Anyhow the big building in the last series of photos is the Richard B. Russell Federal Building, built right were the head house was. Here is a webpage with some great pictures of the old Atlanta Terminal Stations:

In Pittsburgh, the former PRR Station and office building was converted to apartments and condos in the late 1980s. It is occupied by renters and condo owners. Why would people be less able to afford housing in a renovated former railroad office building in Atlanta than they would in Pittsburgh?

I didn't realize paupers lived in the Mid-Town, Buckhead, Atlantic Station, Druid Hills, Lenox, Virginia Highlands and other rapidly improving areas of Atlanta.

Right now here in Atlanta the rental market is going through the roof. Average prices for a one bedroom apt. are starting at $1300 at the low end and going up to $2100 at the high end. In the area I live in there are several apt. building that have just opened up and the starting rent for a one bedroom that is just under 600 square feet is $1750 and they go up from there.

Kinda sort of not what i meant but ok. I'm saying that the rental market is really going up and so are the prices but wages are remaining the same with little or no increase in pay. And being a native of Georgia or the Atlanta you'd know that the property taxes are on the upswing as well. How much was your tax bill this year?? The tax bill for my land lord this year was $140,000 which was up from just under $90,000 in the last two years.
