I wonder what the train makeup was. I've heard of them running combined coal+grain trains through there.

Derailments due to running 200 car long trains with no train makeup restrictions and deferred maintenence to track and cutting thounsands of employees. This happened numerous times when he was at CN as well, I know, I was there. It's not nonsense, but the truth!

But you don't know for fact that any of that applies in this case.

Remember, everybody always says "don't jump to conclusions until the investigation is complete". Or is that only in cases where it looks like the crew might be at fault?

Do we know for sure track maintence was sub standard on the line? Do we know for sure it was because of the long train or handing?

I know what railroads turn into when that tyrant applies precision railroading tactics to railroads he takes over! I lived it, unlike you people, armchair railfans commenting who know more than railroad employees who actually WORK THERE.

Heard from my source the train was just 110 loaded coal cars. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Thanks for the link.  The station's drone shots offer some good perspectives on the derailment.

110 versus 200 that is quite different!!!  I dont know how long they have been running 200 plus car trains but I see them a lot on the C&O but I guess when one out of how ever many derails then it is the fault of someone who is not even in control anymore.

And your wrong. Just like you were in the Barr yard thread a couple of days ago. We get it, you don’t like EHH, but not everything bad that happens at CSX is a result of his 9 months in charge. To continue to claim otherwise is just makeing yourself look foolish.

Trains Derailments Jan-March 2018 (From FRA Safety Data site)
NS 41
CSX 49
UP 71
BNSF 73

Next posting should be some old railroader trying to explain how EHH messed up BNSF and UP, and how bad their infrastructure, deferred maintenance and train handling are...

Because we all know CSX NEVER derailed before EHH took over.

UP and BNSF are also much larger roads, hence the higher totals.

I saw 200 car plus trains on C&O, B&O and others in the 1960's, have records of them Yes, the cars were smaller, but so were the locomotives, as was technology. I'm an old head railroader too, who worked for the toughest RR to run from the late sixties into the 1990's. EHH could not have handled it, but our senior management did. Want some names? I can provide.  Long heavy trains make a lot of sense on some routes, not others. The ex-C&O is the EB most superior mainline that crosses the Alleghenies (substitute the spelling you prefer).  Eb ruling grade 0.57% I do believe. Now, where I live, the giant trains (which I enjoy, but at the same time realize how they mess up the railroad since in daylight it revolves around two 'UPS' trains that cause delays to everything else) might not make the best sense. This is the EHH legacy. But I will also say there is no evidence on our mainline that there is any deferred maintenance. In fact Mof W curfews for  rail, tie, and surfacing gangs have been in effect over moving territories since early spring.

Good try...  Here are the actual numbers for 2017...

Track Route Miles
BNSF = 32,500
UP = 32,100
CSX = 21,000
NS = 19,500

Derailments 2017
UP = 323
BNSF = 267
CSX = 164
NS = 156

Derailments per 1,000 track miles (2017)
CSX = 7.80
NS = 8.00
BNSF = 8.21
UP = 10.06
