The same can be said about a highway. What if that derailment occurred over a major highway? There are many, many rail lines that pass over busy roads of all kinds. It can happen anytime, anywhere. We have been very fortunate considering all the busy railroads and highways in our country, especially with the way many people operate their vehicles, in and out of lanes and at much higher speeds anywhere from 75 MPH to a few going 100 MPH. Hello!!! Are those Amazon packages to be delivered? Date: 08/05/18 12:29 Re: NS derailment in Pittsburgh Author: Lackawanna484 Yes, seeing containers and well cars careening downhill at you seems like a very scary prospect.
Don't know if there's even any place to run to. Some stations are fenced in. Posted from Android Date: 08/05/18 12:46 Re: NS derailment in Pittsburgh Author: NorthernOhioRail ns1000 Wrote:

------------------------------------------------------- > Does NS have another way through Pittsburgh ? Yes and no. This is on the Mon Line which is used by the stack trains to get around downtown and its height restrictions. Any non high car trains can still run the mainline through downtown. Additionally the Conemaugh Line is not affected by this, but also cannot handle high cars. The Mon Line can also be accessed east of town via the Port Perry branch, so coal trains coming north on the Mon can use that as an outlet, but would require a run around move once back on to the main at Wing. The only time a transit line would be a problem is if the transit line derailed blocking the freight line. Did the presence of the transit line foul the NS track or cause the incident? If not, what is the problem? The transit line will have some expensive repairs to do. Date: 08/05/18 15:37 Re: NS derailment in Pittsburgh Author: DJ-12 For those interested in rare rail transit operations, it sounds like the Port Authority is going to detour around the derailment using the Brown Line via Warrington. This line is not normally operated and is used only when maintenance on the transit tunnel is going on or when there is a problem like this one. The line runs through some dense city neighborhoods on old fashioned street running.

Date: 08/05/18 16:59 Re: NS derailment in Pittsburgh Author: JPB Per NS Tier/D&H FAcebook page, 20T and 26T are detouring via Buffalo and Southern Tier.

Date: 08/05/18 17:09 Re: NS derailment in Pittsburgh Author: wmfan3798 For westbound coal and coke trains, a run around move will be required or a set of helpers to pull the train backwards across the Port Perry Branch. The C07 & C35 are gonna require a special move also. The eastbound coal trains are gonna have to run mainline and pick up helpers at Wing.

That excellent discussion we had two weeks ago about the Conemaugh Line, double stacks, etc fits right into this situation. Posted from Android Date: 08/05/18 17:45 Re: NS derailment in Pittsburgh Author: irhoghead I imagine that would be a sight to see from any security cameras.
