Open door policy
Author: ddavies

I went out to Shenandoah Junction after learning that LV 8104 was leading hopper 747 north on the Hagerstown Sub.

By the time he got to the Junction, he came by with his front door open.  :-(   The trailing unit seemed to be doing all the work, perhaps LV was off-line.  On a hot humid day, the AC may not have been on, leading to the open door AC.

I hate having RR related dreams... it happens though if you're in the profession. Well last night, it was a light power move and the leader went tits up! The LV motor may of suffered the same fate and those cabs turn into sweat boxes.

Btw the rest of your photos were good. All that greenery makes me miss the East Coast.

Sometimes the cabs or doors warp to the point the front door won't stay properly latched. Not sure if this is the case...

The outer cab doors on the GE's the past few years are built like a bank vault.  Seriously doubt it was that.

I think the power was reversed at Harrisburg - later reports indicated the LV was trailing (assuming reports to be accurate, that is...)

Probably trying to air out the restroom.

I suspect no functional AC...it happens.....the open door along with at least one open window will ventilate the cab to an astonishing degree....such that you better secure your paperwork, and you don't have to be going very fast. Those widebodies turn into bake ovens if the AC craps out!

Why this unit has the door at the left side?

early cp GE's had no ac, it got so hot 1 day, i had to stop a train because the digital displays on both the computer screens went out, the fans in the console were non operational, you touch screen controls were useless, no speedometer, no length counter, no rear end communication, nothing. later cp did get ac4400's with air conditioning, it was for the computers, NOT THE CREW, then a new problem, non working ac, due to plugged filters at about $100 each, part of hh's legacy of cutting maintenance

Unlikely but worse case scenario - railfan photograhper deterent.

I recall chasing Steamtown's resident F units - doubt the doors on
the nose were open for that reason then, so I'll got with "natural"
air conditioning.

Amazing some railroads feel that is optional - unless, the open door
does the trick?

About 1977 or so, I was riding Amtrak on the NEC listening to my scanner.  One of the Conrail freight trains had a smoking and smelly toilet in the nose section of the locomotive.  The dispatcher told them to keep all doors open and he'd make sure all they saw was clear signals.
