Eastern Railroad Discussion > Train derailment east of Binghamton on ex-ErieDate: 08/09/18 04:50 Train derailment east of Binghamton on ex-Erie Author: toledopatch Sounds like NS was running another detour via the Delaware Division and it hit the dirt:

Date: 08/09/18 04:57 Re: Train derailment east of Binghamton on ex-Erie Author: waivethefive Didn't hear anything about NS running another detour. Nothing was showing planned to go west. NYSW SU99 was coming west last night though. Was probably them.
Posted from Android Date: 08/09/18 04:58 Re: Train derailment east of Binghamton on ex-Erie Author: JPB Don't know for sure but the guess on NYSW Facebook page was the derailed train was NYSW SU-99 given it derailed at around 0230. Train crew is OK but two cars are in the Delaware River. Derailment was due to culvert washout after last night's heavy rains.

Hopefully bad events don't occur in fours.

I have not heard what caused that to happen but I would guess since a portion of the Overpeck bridge fell in the river and the Syracuse bridge fascia collapse the railroad and perhaps the FRA are checking the other bridges much more closely.
Lots of flash flooding in the Deposit area yesterday. Date: 08/09/18 08:24 Re: Train derailment east of Binghamton on ex-Erie Author: sixaxlecentury Its 99. 3 SD60s and one other engine, Not quite on there sides but with significant damage. Crew is OK.
Date: 08/09/18 09:57 Re: Train derailment east of Binghamton on ex-Erie Author: dschlegel Can double stacks be brought down the Lehigh Line to Allentown then on to NJ as an alternate to the NYSW?

I wonder how they'll handle this? >Crew is OK. Good news, has to be a scary experience. Also I’m sure CR would lease some sd40 types as they have in the past. Or just under power 99/100. I would bet that 2 60’s could handle these trains on most nights. Date: 08/11/18 11:51 Re: Train derailment east of Binghamton on ex-Erie Author: PlyWoody The wreck was caused by the failure of the New York, Susquehanna & Western RR to comply to FRA track inspection Rule $213.239: "Special Inspection":
"In the event of fire, flood, severe storm, of other occurrence which might have damaged track structure, a special inspection must be made of the track involved as soon as possible after the occurrence". Deposit and several of the towns' in the valley around the railroad declared a 'state of emergency' during those tremendous down pours of rain that evening. Any railroad track running through the area of a 'state of emergency' should be declared out of service track till inspection. NYS&W has a set policy of only Tuesday and Thursday track inspection. Their management and dispatchers seem to ignore the requirements of $213.239. The NYS&W should have their MofW employees phone the office if they every hear of a 'state of emergency' along their lines. The company should be on the contact list of all the adjacent town governments. Why do we keep having these failures to order track inspection for flood events? Edited 2 time(s).
