Questions About Trains 123 and 124
Author: PRR_4859

Good Evening:

Do trains 123 and 124 still run from Linwood, NC to Decatur, IL? Where do these trains change crews?

Also, are there any other through trains that run on the NS Frankfort District through Indiana?

Lastly, how many trains use the connection where the Marion Branch and the Frankfort District cross?

Thank you in advance.

I remember 123/124 from back in the 90's when they ran from Granite City, IL to Sheffield, AL via Corinth, MS after NS bought the IC Birmingham Line from Fulton, KY to Haleyville, AL. They ran on the IC via trackage rights from Fulton to Centralia, IL they acquired with the line purchase. This arrangement lasted between 1988-1995 when NS got fed up with delays on the IC and moved traffic to strictly NS rails. Then the 123/124 numbers were assigned to different trains after that.

123 is still East Decatur, IL - Linwood, NC.  It changes crews in Frankfort, IN, Cincinnati, OH, Burnside, KY, Knoxville, TN and Asheville, NC. 124 is Cincinnati, OH - Decatur, IL.  It changes crews at Frankfort, IN.

368 and 369 (between Elkhart, IN and Muncie, IN) are the only scheduled road trains that use the connection at Alexandria.
