Eastern Railroad Discussion > Close Call for the B875-11 Crew - 12 October 2018Date: 10/14/18 12:08 Close Call for the B875-11 Crew - 12 October 2018 Author: DTWilson Bringing the empty hoppers out of the Mt. Storm Power Station is usually undertaken by 2 crews ( 2 locomotives - each end of the train) running as the U**-** and the B875-**. Typical operation has the "U" trains crew to lead from the power plant east to Bayard, WV on the Stoney River Sub. Once at Bayard the "B875 Crew will lead onto the Thomas Sub and continue east to Keyser, WV. Once at Keyser, the "U" power will be facing west for a new road crew to take the train Grafton.
Around Midnight the B875 crew hit a tree around mile post BAH 51.5 in a curve west of Blanie, WV. The tree penetrated the Engineers side windshield and continued across the cab knocking out the Conductors side window. Both the Engineer and Conductor were injured. The crew from the "U" power tied down the 90 car train, walked ahead to cut away the "B" power and used that power set to transport the injured crew to the crossing at Blanie, WV. approx. 7 miles east of the impact site to meet the EMS Responders. The "B" crew was transported and later released from the hospital. 1) A re-crewed U051-11, using power from Keyser brings their train and the damaged units from B875-11 off the Interchange Track at Piedmont, WV later that morning. 2) Close-Up of the damage to #700 with a tree branch still in the cab. 2) U051-11 eastbound at Keymont, WV Additional Photos from the scene can be found on the Kitzmiller Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page.... Did it fall as the train approached or was this already sticking out on the tracks and not time enough to stop the train.

The location was right near a curve and was raining heavily at the time. The area suffered several landslides last week from all the rain. Tim W. As always they are appreciated especially by folks like me since I do not get around like I used to, and I am so glad that the crew on that locomotive with the tree sticking through the windshield were not seriously injured. The Good Lord was on their side for sure.
