Norfolk Southern Suffers A Couple Of Setbacks (Updated 3:00 PM.)
Author: NSSpike

This week hasn't been to kind to NS. On December 4th there was washout east of Valdosta Georgia on the GS&F line around MP 169G at Mayday. The washout occurred as a result of upwards of 7” of rain in the area over the weekend that caused the Alapaha River to run over it's banks. CSX took a couple of Detour Trains during the little over 24 hour period before NS train service was restored at restricted speeds on the busy Atlanta to Jacksonville line.

Today, December 6, in the very early morning hours NS 220 (DALLAS, TX (KCS IDAAT)- ATLANTA, GA) was reported to have derailed at Norris Junction just to the east of Irondale, Alabama. Around 3:15 am west bound train NS 219 (ATLANTA,GA – DALLAS,TX (KCS IATDA) was told they would head into Edwardsville Ala and tie down their trainain. A west bound empty Scherer coal drag was scheduled to tie down their train at Lincoln Alabama.

As of 7:20 am EST there were no service alerts listed on the NS or Amtrak sites as a result of this latest derailment.

NS has issued a service disruption alert.

Please be advised that a derailment has been reported near Birmingham, AL. Norfolk Southern personnel are onsite and have begun damage assessments. All trains operating in the following corridors are being impacted:
  • NS Points <> Dallas/Mexico (via Meridian)
  • NS points <> SoCal/NorCal (via Shreveport)
  • Southeast Points <> New Orleans
  • Southeast/Northeast Points <> McCalla
Of Note: Both Crescents 19 departed Atlanta & 20 departed New Orleans this morning. Perhaps by the time both get close to Norris Jct
NS feels they will have the area opened back up for limited movements???

From what I hear, it is NS 213 that derailed at Lovick and has 9 double stacks on their side blocking both mains. Hulcher is already on the scene and NS expects to clear one track by 2pm.

Just before 10am eastern NS 220 with only a few cars went east through Villa Rica Georgia.
Reliable source indicated that at around noon eastern west bound trains NS 153, NS 219, & NS 733 were tied down west of Anniston Alabama. NS 225 was running west out of Tallapoosa with AMTK 19 following. NS 23D was following the Crescent west bound.

Track 1 was opened about 1pm. Track 2 wont be open till sometime this evening. ABC3340 has pictures of the site on their web site.
19 followed 219 all the way to Irondale.

Does NS 213 terminate at McCalla, AL (Birmingham)? I thought it was a Rutherford (Harrisburg, PA) to Atlanta train.

Thank you in advance.

You are correct. The poster above was in error as train involved was NS 220 East bound as indicated in the original post.
