“The slide “ on NS gallitizin
Author: Mofw2007

Does NS ever run west up the slide ? I know before PTC signal upgrades that is not signaled that way they get a form. But once upgrades are done will be a normal practice? Or is there a rule stating they can not west up the slide due to grade? I know it’s steep at tunnel. Looking for insight from the guys to run that route and know the operations. Thank you I have always wondered about this

They do but it is very very rare.  There was a derailment awhile back that forced a few trains to run west up the slide.  I believe it was just high priorty intermodal trains that did.   I almost think some photos might have been posted on here.

Normally there would be no reason to do so since the grade is less on tracks 3 and 2. I have only ever seen 2 moves do it: one was a hi wide special in the Conrail era and the other was a westbound Pennsylvanian going around some sort of issue on 2/3.

The Slide on Main 1 of the Pittsburgh Line in Gallitzin at MP 248. An almost 3% grade east to around MP 246.8.

Nice catch with the SD45-2 as the leader.

Got lucky. The SD60E third was leading till Cresson when it crapped out and the whole engine consist was spun on the loop track which put 1703 in the lead.

Sounds unlikely. Why would it be dangerous
for an upgrade train?

It's nothing special for steepness anyway.
Steeper than what's east of it, but short.

With that grade and degree of curve and if you weren’t perfect on train make up, handling, etc you could run a high risk of stringline derailment. That was my thinking of why might be a rule to that

What is the degree of curve there?

I remember that day.  I waited for it in Altoona...

The term "Slide" meant a by-pass or alternate route between two locations.

Looks like it's a mile of 2.2 to 2.3 percent-- sharpest
curve is less than 3 degrees. So no problem for
a westward train.

Dozerman's post show a sight I never tire of watching when
I'm in the area - - the train cresting the Allegheny's.

Thanks for posting.

I last ran there back in 1991 and wonder are the Horns still in place? If you exceded speed on the hill wayside horns would blow and cab signals flip in the cab requiring you to bring the train to a stop.

I rode down the Slide on 42 here a couple years ago. Even on Amtrak you can just feel the train going downhill.

Where was this shot from?  I have walked the slide several times, tunnel to Benny (legally!), and cannot pinpoint this location, road, etc. .  BTW, very impressive shot of the oil cans illustrating the change in the grade!
