Eastern Railroad Discussion > Dash9 vs gevo observationDate: 12/29/18 14:21 Dash9 vs gevo observation Author: mully Never noticed before but saw a dash9 and a gevo end to end and was amazed at the difference in size between the two. Anyone else ever notice or know why the ES44 is so much larger?
Gary Posted from iPhone Date: 12/29/18 15:46 Re: Dash9 vs gevo observation Author: Gonut1 It is due to the horsepower-to-inch ratio.
Gonut Date: 12/29/18 15:57 Re: Dash9 vs gevo observation Author: exhaustED Larger in which direction? They're both 73'2" long... do you mean radiator size...? If so that's down to more complex cooling systems for reducing emissions in the GEVO.

Russ Date: 12/29/18 16:17 Re: Dash9 vs gevo observation Author: mully Length was same from what I could tell as well as height to walkway. It was mainly a huge difference at radiators. Is the cab same in size ?

Thanks for the insight Gary Date: 12/30/18 05:06 Re: Dash9 vs gevo observation Author: reel_smooth Pardon the stupid question: What defines a "GEVO", as opposed to a D8-40CW/D9-44CW/ES44DC/ES44AC/ET44AC-AH. To me, General Electric is General Electric.

To me, > General Electric is General Electric. In that list the DASH-8s came first (1980s-ish), then came DASH-9s (mid-1990s), then came the GEVO models in the 2000s. A GEVO gets a 12 cylinder engine, not a 16 cylinder engine. Also exhaust emissions are reduced due to lots of cooling of combustion gases etc. So when a model starts with the ES or ET designation it's basically a tier 3 or tier 4 GEVO. GEVO stands for/is a marketing acronym for General Electric Evolution Series... Wikipedia will give you more detail if needed. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 12/30/18 05:23 by exhaustED. To add to what ED said, GE used the Cooper Bessemer designed 7FDL until the end of Dash-9 AC4400 production. The GEVO and the HDL (AC6000) were based on the Deutz 632. Completely different engines.
