Narrow Gauge Critter at Bethlehem Steel.
Author: birdman

This narrow gauge locomotive has recently been put on display near the old Bethlehem Steel office building,  It is visible in a newly fenced area adjacent to 3rd St. in Bethlehem along with a short secton of narrow gauge track and some artifacts.  Any information re. the model, manufacturer, etc. would be appreciated.

I think a "Beep" is a O gauge diesel locomotive that is chopped in half to make it smaller and more toy looking. Like a GP9 with two axles for example.

The Beep was real. It was a repowered Baldwin that also had an emd geep long hood. I do believe that was a Santa Fe contraption. Same thing was done with Alcos.

Could this be a GE 25 ton locomotive?

Looks like a Whitcomb.

Back in 2015 I photographed this critter in one of the covered areas of the Bethlehem Steel facility. Could it be one in the same?

Yes, it is almost certainly the same one or a similar one that has been refurbished and placed on display.  Longtime Lehigh Valley resident, Ribert Wilt, has produced two wonderful books on the Bethlehem Steel Facility in the Lehigh Valley and has
confirmed that the locomotive is  GE 25 ton unit that was used within the plant complex.

Railfan & Railroad did a long article on the mill shutdown. Beth Steel offered carefully guided tours, including a night time visit

Lots of incredible colors, as pouring took place.

Steel also had a short electric railway with enormous ore cars. The broad gauge track was left in place for years.

Still looks like a Whitcomb to me. The hood looks nothing like a GE, and you can see down the middle of the radiator grill where the "WHITCOMB" name plate was bolted on.
