OT Wal-Mart to hire 900 truckers
Author: Lackawanna484

And pay them $90,000 a year, says CBS.

Sounds like a good improvement. WMT is already a significant rail customer. FEC drops a cut at Fort Pierce most nights. The cargo drays over to I-95 center.

Yup, just run right out and hire people in an industry that already can't find people.

Out

In many cases, that's true.  But there's a waiting list for WMT drivers here in the Fort Pierce area.

My guess is they'll hire a lot of owner/operators who are looking to downshift, and would like a driving job where they're home most nights.

People may scoff at $90,000, but it's good money in many areas.  Pay people good money, give them respect, and you'll do OK.

Yes, go out and recruit,  driver pay and been in the dumpster.  Still can be a hectic job.  My son  was just coming through 80-94 in Indiana during snow/ice storm.

You are worn down after that.

You are not home every night with Walmart. It is a sleeper operation.

Even with sleeper stays it's a good gig...I make considerable more on paper as a locomotive engineer, but I loose nearly a half to railroad retirement and union dues and so forth......a non railroad job witholds much less and leaves much more in pocket.

Wal Mart does not use owner operators in their fleet. Wal Mart has some sleeper teams I believe, but the number is small,

As someone who has been in the profession a long time let me say in a lot of cases a high turnover rate isn't so much about the money, it's about the working conditions. Unsafe equipment and lying dispatchers and managers and a "figure it out for yourself" attitude are the biggies.

The higher pay is nice but eventually enough becomes enough and you jump ship. I always used to tell people who wanted to go somewhere else that companies are all the same the only difference is the name on the door. I always tell people the best deal is to find a private company that owns it's own fleet of trucks. That way you're pretty much an out and back driver instead of bouncing all over the place.

Same as working for the rr seems to be one company is just as bad as the rest.

The companies that want to hire oo's and then play the independent contractor game or worse yet hire you as contractor then rent you a company truck are the absolute worst. Been there done that and never again.

As for FEC's business with Walmart at Fort Pierce, I was under the impression Walmart had pulled that business off the FEC a couple of years ago, after having started it up when diesel was north of $4 a gallon.

I mentioned this thread to two guys at the charity where I volunteer.

$90,000 is way above what's paid locally.  These jobs pull about $50,000 plus benefits. And there's a good waiting list.

The U.S. needs more foreign workers to fill slots in order to allow the economy to continue to grow. It also boosts Social Security.

We have 12-20 million illegals, just how many would you like us to receive?

Many of those "illegals" are doctors, business owners, nurses, Oil technicians, hotel workers, etc.

Even President Trump staffs his Bedminster and Mar a Lago properties with them.

I also want to know what the source of that particular number range is. Counting how many people are residing and working in the United States illegally is a fraught undertaking.

They did according to all videos seen. I think was really a result of opening a new distribution center north of Ft Pierce, not sure, but when new DC opened, they stopped FEC intermodal..

Walmart moved its cold distribution operations up the coast to Cocoa Beach in mid-2017, but my understanding is Fort Pierce was enlarged to provide more dry goods etc support.

It's on Jenkins Road, near where the Turnpike and I-95 cross.  Very visible from I-95, north of Midway Road
